Is it legal for a company to force contract workers to buy worker's comp insurance?
Q. Is it legal for a company to force contract workers to buy worker's comp insurance? My company threatened all contrated workers that they will lose their contracts if they don't buy worker's comp insurance which was not a part of our original contracts. I my choices are sign up for this insurance or lose my contract, isn't this duress?
Asked by Robert C - Tue Nov 3 00:31:10 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, it is legal for a company require to a contractor to provide worker's compensation insurance for the contractor's employees. This is to protect the company from worker's compensation claims from people who are not their employees. The contractor can NOT charge its employees for the premiums though. This is a common practice in contractor relationships. It is not duress. It's good buisness practice. If you are an independent contractor and you have no employees, you probably will not be able to buy WC insurance for just yourself. Worker's Comp is a statutory scheme. Each state has different laws. It really depends on the laws of your state. If the WC requirement is not in your contract, you may have an action for breach of contract.… [cont.]

A. Some assist in supporting victims of crime, accidents and the families. They also help people bought in with no place to live, no benefits and counseling relatives when the patient dies. Being a social worker in an emergency room , especially on night duty is a very stressful job, and you need a strong stomach and character to deal with people in a time of personal tragedy and crisis. You will deal with reporting abused children and also telling the parents. You will also have to finish your work and leave it at the door if you want to not burn out, as you will meet many people who due to circumstances, budget, time restraints and job limits you are unable to help even though you know that you were there last chance. A very important part… [cont.]

How high is the chance to become a permenant worker from being a temporary worker?
Q. I found a job posting at government, really a decent job, but it only lasts for two years. How high is he chance for me to become a permenant worker at government after spending two years as a temporary worker? I am little afraid that after two years I will be laid off...:(
Asked by JD - Thu Jan 21 20:11:51 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There may be a particular reason your job will only last 2 years, have you asked why? If your job is deleted in 2 years and you were better than average I would think you get a permanent position in a different department. Find out why it is only for 2 years and that will help you determine the possibility of it being extended.

How does a minimum wage worker with little work experience rent an apartment?
Q. I would like to quit college in order to live an independent life as a minimum wage worker. But! I don't know if the landlord would let me rent apartment when they see that I don't have much of an experience. For example, if they see that I have worked at a part time job for a few months, would they be willing to rent an apartment?
Asked by John - Fri Dec 5 23:13:13 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Rule of thumb: The amount you pay for rent should not exceed 1/3 of your income. Ex. If you bring home $900 p/month you should only rent a room or apartment for $300 p/month Always have at least two months worth of security deposit ready to put down for your apartment. If you can show a landlord that you have the ability to save money to cover at least two months worth of rent...they'll probably give you the opportunity to rent from them. I'm a landlord and I have no problem renting to first time renters, people with bad credit, etc. as long as they have 2 months sec. deposit.

A. I think being non judgemental is extremely important. You want to be able to talk to your health care professionals without feeling embarrassed or like you're scum. empathy is important too, put yourself in your clients shoes so you can understand how they feel and so you can explain things to them in language they will understand. the most important things you want from a health care professional is good treatment and to do that you need to understand what is wrong and what needs to be done about it and you want to feel like what you say is not being judged and no one else will find out about it which comes down to the health care workers attitude and whether it inspires trust. and both of these come from a good, non judgemental attitued… [cont.]

What to say to a co-worker who lost a brother and sister within two weeks?
Q. I lost my father so I feel like I should know what to say to him but I just don't. My co-worker really means a lot to me as he's been a mentor to me for a long time now and is very insightful and encouraging. I want to find the right words to say to him as he goes through this tough time but I just can't think of what and know that no matter what the words will not help the pain. Any ideas?
Asked by Missy M - Mon Nov 17 12:30:57 2008 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Look Im so sorry is and okay thing to say. But sometimes you need to be a little more straightforwad than that. Be his rock, or just lay loose. Either way he knows you feel bad. When my grandfather died my dad was depressed. I tried to be strong for him. No matter what you say there is nothing you can do to take away the pain. It's still there. At times like this all you can possibly want is support. Look him in the eye and say "Look I cant possibly imagine what your going through right now, but know this, that im here for you and if you want to talk about anything with me just ask." If he doesnt want to talk then let it be. He will come to you for help if he wants it.

How much does an average horse barn worker get paid hourly?
Q. I am doing some research and I was wondering that. The horse barn worker would be needed for daily chores, feeding, mucking, turnout, etc. I just want to know how much they would roughly be paid an hour in a small town in Florida. Just in case this is relevant, it is about one of 2 or 3 barns in this town. Please and Thank you. =]

A. well, i get paid 45 dollars [one lesson] for a days work or mucking 10 stalls [$3 a stall] and doing turnout/feeding, chores. you will probably have better luck trading for lessons or board then getting money, but this seems to be about normal.. at my old barn i was paid the same 45 for 6-8 hours of work.

Q. On a few occasions, I have swung by a co-worker's desk to say good-bye but it looks like the person left already (computer off, coat and bag are gone, etc) and signs out the next day for the previous day. According to the timesheet, this person should have worked about 1-2 hours more. My supervisor doesn't listen very well to their subordinates and also has a hard time believing people. Should I bring this to my supervisor's attention?

A. Your best bet would be to apply to 4-year colleges, and major in Family Studies, Developmental Psychology, or something like that. There are some colleges that offer a BSW (Bachelors degree in Social Work), so that could be a possibility for you, although this particular degree is not necessary in order to become qualified for a job in social services. After you graduate, find a job in a social services field, and work there for a year or three. You may decide to stay at this level of employment, or you may decide that further education will help you attain further goals. In any event, your job in the field will strengthen your application if you decide to apply to graduate MSW programs. An MSW will qualify you for administrative… [cont.]

Under the HIPAA regulations, how can a social worker guarantee privacy using an interrupter?
Q. With the growing number of immigrants, many social workers may find that he or she may need to use an interrupter to assist a client. HIPAA stresses confidentiality. If the interrupter is employed by the agency, this individual would have to follow the same rules as the social worker. My concern is, if the interrupter is a family member, how can the social worker guarantee confidentiality of the client's information. There does not to seem to be any stipulations for this under HIPAA. If you know where I can find this information, please post a website.
Asked by kim51165 - Mon Jul 6 12:05:31 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. An Interrupter? Most social workers use interpreters. Interrupters would be quite disruptive. If you meant "interpreter," well, you just have to trust the interpreter. He is bound by his professional ethics. HIPPAA is just a fig leaf anyway--there are no meaningful sanctions for violation. The social worker, of course, cannot and does not "guarantee" that the interrupter/interpreter will not talk out of school. Maybe this person should take the trouble to learn the language of the country he/she lives in?

A. First, research social workers and see what kind you'd like to be. There are social workers that work for CPS. They are investigators and case managers. Public school districts also have social workers. They do some counseling with children and usually help families access services in their area. Hospitals also have social workers. Their job is usually to report to CPS if there are concerns (school social workers do this too) and to help families with services - such has finding respite care, helping new moms sign up for WIC and get free car seats. They usually don't have long-term involvement with a family. Lastly, the military hires civilian social workers for their Family Advocacy programs. They do a little informal counseling, [cont.]
