Is it legal for a company to force contract workers to buy worker's comp insurance?
Q. Is it legal for a company to force contract workers to buy worker's comp insurance? My company threatened all contrated workers that they will lose their contracts if they don't buy worker's comp insurance which was not a part of our original contracts. I my choices are sign up for this insurance or lose my contract, isn't this duress?

A. Yes, it is legal for a company require to a contractor to provide worker's compensation insurance for the contractor's employees. This is to protect the company from worker's compensation claims from people who are not their employees. The contractor can NOT charge its employees for the premiums though. This is a common practice in contractor relationships. It is not duress. It's good buisness practice. If you are an independent contractor and you have no employees, you probably will not be able to buy WC insurance for just yourself. Worker's Comp is a statutory scheme. Each state has different laws. It really depends on the laws of your state. If the WC requirement is not in your contract, you may have an action for breach of contract.… [cont.]

A. Anyone can be a respite worker. Are you looking for someone licensed? All you would need to do is call around for a CNA (nursing assistant) if he needs some kind of medical care. If he just needs to be watched closely, I'd just post on craigslist looking for respite worker with experience with DD children. It's essentially just a babysitter you are looking for if he doesnt have medial needs. I often need respite from my 3 month old. If Medicaid does not pay for it, you'd just have to pay out of pocket. If you looking to pay someone with a license, expect to pay $20 or more per hour.

What is the difference between a Social Worker and a Psychiatrist?
Q. My wife has decided to see a Social Worker with a Master Degree instead of a Psychiatrist. She says the difference is that a Psychiatrist looks at the person whereas the Social Worker looks at the person's surroundings. I am just afraid my wife is going to come home and start blaming everything around her for her craziness.
Asked by parkdad73 - Thu Aug 31 14:50:39 2006 - - 15 Answers - 0 Comments
A. A psychiatrist can write your wife prescriptions whereas a Social Worker is basically a Psycologist, or glorified councelor.

A. Yes, of course. Social Work schools are not that competitive. Just get a degree in something, preferably a social science, and do as well as you can in it. You'll get in just fine. I know at my university the cut off GPA is a 3.0 for school of social work.

How does a minimum wage worker with little work experience rent an apartment?
Q. I would like to quit college in order to live an independent life as a minimum wage worker. But! I don't know if the landlord would let me rent apartment when they see that I don't have much of an experience. For example, if they see that I have worked at a part time job for a few months, would they be willing to rent an apartment?
Asked by John - Fri Dec 5 23:13:13 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Rule of thumb: The amount you pay for rent should not exceed 1/3 of your income. Ex. If you bring home $900 p/month you should only rent a room or apartment for $300 p/month Always have at least two months worth of security deposit ready to put down for your apartment. If you can show a landlord that you have the ability to save money to cover at least two months worth of rent...they'll probably give you the opportunity to rent from them. I'm a landlord and I have no problem renting to first time renters, people with bad credit, etc. as long as they have 2 months sec. deposit.

Q. How much schooling does it take? What majors will allow you to become a social worker if social services is not an offered major at your school? Do you have to have certification/licensing? Do you have to do internships? Basically, what can I expect in the schooling process of it all?

A. I am majoring in social work at the moment, and want to work with child welfare. Here in Texas, at the college I am attending, there is a Bachelor's of Social Work (BSW), a Master's of Social Work (MSW), and a PhD program. The BSW includes internships and volunteer work with the different practice classes. The program requires 400-500 supervised hours by a social worker. Once a BSW is obtained, you can seek out a job in the field. However, the BSW is the minimum requirement. And most jobs today are requiring more advanced degrees. A MSW helps you to specialize in a certain area and requires 900 hours of supervision. Some states require you to be licensed at the BSW and MSW levels. They can do this by written or oral examinations. This… [cont.]

If you mean those that have gone through the legal system to come to our Country to work then like any other worker here they provide a service in which they are paid for. In that way they are a convenient and willing group of workers that can fill a labor need. If by migrant worker you mean an illegal immigrant then I see no advantage that they might bring to our Country. A. If she knows your full name and birth date, she can find out a LOT -- she might even be able to run a credit report on you without your knowledge. If you don't want this person to know where you work, how can you call her a "friend"? I think this would be a good person to "de friend." Google yourself and see what you can find out about yourself. Search for your name and the name of your company, and see what comes up. Search your name and your address. Is your birthday visible on Facebook? Can non-friends see your Face book info?
