How to open windows that have been painted shut?
Q. The storm windows were removed, the windows were painted shut and now the storm windows are back on. Therefore; not allowing me direct access to the painted window. How would you suggest I open the windows without removing the storm windows, if at all possible? Because the storm windows are on the outside and closed, I can't access the painted side of the window. Is there another way to open the window without having to remove the storm windows in order to get to the edges that i need to cut.

A. We have had that happen too. It is a bother for sure, but we used a serrated knife and cut very carefully along the edges to get it loose so we could open the window. if the paint is reallly thick and this doesnt work, you may have to use some paint remover on the edges and then paint again without painting them shut. what kind of window treatments should I use on extremely small windows?
Q. I live in the basement and I have a total of 3 windows which are extremely small. The ones in the study and the kitchen are 1 ft in height X 2 ft in length. The ones in the bedroom are 1 ft in height X 4 ft in length. These windows are located near the ceiling and not in the middle of the wall if that helps. Putting up regular sized curtains seem inappropriate and I'm scared it may overpower the look of the room.Not to mention it may look weird. What are some ways that i can cover up the windows for privacy reasons? Are curtains the only way to cover the windows and if so, what can I use? What are some alternative ways if there are any?

A. If you keep it simple by using a valance the small window will not be over dressed. Use a roman shade or blinds for privacy.

How do I seal my windows from cold air?
Q. I rent a home and we are not allowed to use plastic on our windows. Some of the windows are old, and leak air really bad. I tried weather strips last year but it didnt really work so well. Any suggestions? Should I use the plastic anyways? The window in my kids room makes a terrible hissing sound from the wind. Also some of the windows dont have storm doors on them. The newer windows are fine but the old ones are terrible they leak where the window shuts and hits the sill. Please help froze our butts off last year, and lost a bunch of heat and money. A. If you have a Mac, you already have the simplest and very powerful movie editing software loaded. Unless you just don't want to try new things, I would suggest you try using iMovie. If you can't bring yourself to do that, then purchase Virtual PC or VMWare Fussion to load Windows onto your Mac. You can't get around not loading something extra to run PC software on a Mac.

How much does it cost to replace old windows with new larger windows?
Q. I am thinking of buying an older home and most of the windows are pretty small (I like lots of natural light). Before buying I am trying to figure out how much it would cost to replace some of the smaller windows in the living room and kitchen with bigger windows, probably to make them about 5 feet tall by 3 feet wide (or whatever is a standard size close to this). Secondly how much it would cost to add windows where currently none exist and thirdly to add a glass patio door where none currently exists. I would be able to take out the old windows myself but would need to pay someone to intall them all which adds the most cost I am sure. I live in Wisconsin. A. here is a link to the M/S website for windows media player or you can always try thepiratebay.org or isount.com or any other torrent sites. but my suggestion is VLC media player, it plays pretty much anything you can throw at it and it is really useful, much more than WMP, and if your going to burn CD's/DVD's out of WMP use infraburner insted, much better plus both are free!

A. in the run box (windows key + R) or the "search programs and files" textfield at the bottom of your startmenu, type "msconfig" without the quotes. The boot tab should have all the stuff you need to get it removed. Another alternative is to use bcdedit from the command line, which is probably out of the scope of this post.

Q. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 which I need to run on Windows 98. Running it virtually is not an option. The reason for this ridiculous request is that my Grandma bought a new laptop, shipped with Windows 7 home premium, and she can't work it, she says she wants Windows 98 back. A. I would get XP put on the laptop this is better than 98 and uses the same space as windows 7, but is easier to use than 98 or 7. Either get a XP cd off Ebay or a local computer shop can put this on for you.

How do you use Windows Defender to block a program from the internet?
Q. I have Windows Vista Home Premium and I'm using Windows Defender as my firewall. I have an annoying program that always connects to the internet when I start it. Windows Defender doesn't ask me if I want to block it or not. How do I set Windows Firewall to block that program from the internet? When I went to exceptions, that program isn't on the list. Is there some way to manually select a program to block?

How do I transfer a windows XP word document to a Windows 98 Computer?
Q. The windows 98 laptop doesn't accept the jump drive I usually use to transport documents, but it does accept Floppy Disks, which my windows XP doesn't have. A. I'd try to find someone with a computer that has both a floppy drive and a USB port. Alternatively, you might be able to cable the laptop and the other computer together with a crossover Ethernet cable and just pop the document over. Given the problems of networking Windows 98, though, I'd recommend the first method. Hope that helps.

A. I would use the rice paper blinds. The filter out the suns rays but let the light in. They also make mechanical ones with remote controls.( Sound like a kids toy.)

What type of window treatment to use for higher than average windows?
Q. I have 2 windows in my bedroom that are 48" W by 36" H. The sill is about 55" off of the floor. I do need them covered completely at times for privacy. I feel that floor length would look odd since there is so much space below window. They seem a little bare w/only a mini blind or roman shade.

A. You could use shudders or blinds, but I really think that using floor length curtains isn't a bad thing. I use floor Length curtains in my basement, and to me, it feels less like a basement because it 'tricks the eye'. You could also put a dresser underneath the window to make it look as though the window isn't as high as it really is. Good Luck

A. the possibility is that if it doens't have a cd drive that there is a recovery pertition on the hard drive. this should be eviddent during post as it will tell you something like "to access recovery drive press alt+f11" or some such.

How do I wash between a storm window and 50 year old wooden frame windows if I can't get out the storm window?
Q. I have 50 year old wooden windows with old storm windows with screens installed outside of it. When I open the wooden window from the inside, then pull out the storm window to remove it towards me, there is not enough room for the storm window to fit through and pull out. So I can't clean the windows. Also do the old windows on the top somehow drop down to wash between the top storm and the top old window? The windows were installed like this when we bought the house.

A. I've seen people remove the wooden strips that hold the windows in the frame and take the window out entirely. If you try this, be aware that there may be window weight ropes attached to each side of the window. You will have to figure out a way to tie them off or jam something in the pulley hole to jam the ropes so they don't fall down into the wall.
