How can i remove windows xp from my laptop and reinstall windows Me -the laptops original software?
Q. I have recently bought a used laptop that is old. The person I had bought it from had installed windows xp on it, even though it originally came with windows Me. I want to remove the windows xp because it runs slows on the laptop because it takes up more memory than the windows Me would. Also I want to remove windows xp because it is an illegal copy. So when I tried to run updates on it, windows would not install updates because the windows xp is not genuine.

A. I would suggest a full system restore replacing the Windows XP with the correct version of Windows ME. As explained from other members here, insert the system recovery disks if you have these and follow the instructions. This will completely remove all existing Windows XP profiles and will restore your laptop back to factory state after a full system restore. It is also very likely that your laptop is not capable of working with Windows XP as a result of insufficient system resources on your laptop which is one reason why your laptop is not preforming at its optimum proficiency.

I am considering buying windows for my house, what do you suggest?
Q. I live in metro-Detroit and I am considering windows for my home. I need glass block windows for the basement windows and I am still deciding what kind of windows to get for the ground level of my ranch-style home. I Have 3- 36"x24" windows, two smaller windows in each the bathroom and kitchen and a 60"x 36" Large window for my front room. I also need a front door. About how much will I be spending? What kind of windows do you suggest. Any tips or stories you want to share?

A. I would definitely go for double pane (insulated) windows for your climate. It looks like these are a standard size window and probably the door too. These shouldn't be hard to find at the local hardware super store. There are different quality windows but I would look for the kind that don't require painting. You need to shop around for the best price.

How do I get windows on my mac computer without having to buy any software or insert any extra cd's?
Q. I want to have windows on my apple laptop so I can download windows movie maker. I want a program that costs no money and doesn't require any additional software or cd's. If there is a link where I can download windows movie maker or any free windows movie making software for mac without getting windows on my computer, send me the link below.

A. If you have a Mac, you already have the simplest and very powerful movie editing software loaded. Unless you just don't want to try new things, I would suggest you try using iMovie. If you can't bring yourself to do that, then purchase Virtual PC or VMWare Fussion to load Windows onto your Mac. You can't get around not loading something extra to run PC software on a Mac.

The newer windows are fine but the old ones are terrible they leak where the window shuts and hits the sill. Please help froze our butts off last year, and lost a bunch of heat and money. Thanks in advance. we cant use duct tape or anything like that either. i cannot buy new windows or fix them my landlords nickname is balls which means yeah right she aint fixing a damn… [cont.]

A. The government says you have Tenant rights. Having children makes your case even more important. At this point you shouldn't worry about what your cheapskate landlord thinks. Look at the Web Site below. I think you will find all the info you need. Good Luck!! and take care of the problem before it gets any colder.

How do I fix my power windows on my 1997 Ford Explorer?
Q. All four windows on my '97 explorer quit working. I've checked all fuses that are listed in a repair manual and they all have power going to them. I'm wondering if the window motor has gone out or if I need to replace the master switch which controls all windows. I can't hear any noise such as a window motor running when I press the window buttons. I need to figure out what is going on because these west Texas days are a real scorcher at times.

On exterior windows, how can you put the decorative lines to give a more colonial feel?
Q. I just bought a very old city colonial with new replacement windows. However, they look very boxy and uninteresting. There aren't any grooves in the window to insert decorative lines. Do you have any other suggestions on putting lines on new windows to give it a colonial feel? Thanks so much!

A. I'm not sure where you buy it now but they make a self-adhesive tape which imitates the look of leaded glass. I'd call some local glass shops. If they don't have it, they can probably order it.

Q. I downloaded windows vista inspirat and it had one thing i didn't like which was the revert to windows classic on every start up. A. What is that, a Vista skin for XP? Your editing the shell, which can be tricky in the 1st place. If there is no option to keep it that way, then revert back.

Tall skinny windows and lots of them-Any ideas for window coverings?
Q. I'm remodeling a 30X22 foot room. It's a kitchen and living room all in one, but not my main living room and no TV. The challenge with this room is the windows. There are 7 windows plus french doors. 4 of these windows are 6 feet tall and only 2 feet wide. They all currently have 2" wood slat blinds. I think I want to dress up the windows, but don't know what to do with the skinny windows. I'm not crazy about valances in general. My style is casual contemporary leaning toward traditional, but the kitchen is going to be ultra-modern with a 9X7 foot island. What can a person do with this many windows PLUS having these narrow windows?

A. Roman shades are simple to make and can have a very clean, contemporary look. They can be customized to your windows very easily. Mount them on the inside of the framing (which is probably how your slats are mounted anyway) for the neatest look. These can be made with interesting fabrics and matching ones could be made for the french doors to give the whole area a uniform, streamlined look.

How do you use Windows Defender to block a program from the internet?
Q. I have Windows Vista Home Premium and I'm using Windows Defender as my firewall. I have an annoying program that always connects to the internet when I start it. Windows Defender doesn't ask me if I want to block it or not. How do I set Windows Firewall to block that program from the internet? When I went to exceptions, that program isn't on the list. Is there some way to manually select a program to block?

What type of window treatment to use for higher than average windows?
Q. I have 2 windows in my bedroom that are 48" W by 36" H. The sill is about 55" off of the floor. I do need them covered completely at times for privacy. I feel that floor length would look odd since there is so much space below window. They seem a little bare w/only a mini blind or roman shade.
Asked by Nancy A - Wed Feb 4 11:56:28 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. You could use shudders or blinds, but I really think that using floor length curtains isn't a bad thing. I use floor Length curtains in my basement, and to me, it feels less like a basement because it 'tricks the eye'. You could also put a dresser underneath the window to make it look as though the window isn't as high as it really is. Good Luck

How do I stop windows live messenger windows automatically popping up when I have a message?
Q. My windows live messenger is really annoying me. Sometimes when I am on firefox or something else whenever someone sends me a message it automatically brings the message window to the front, on several occasions I have almost accidentally entered a password into a conversation! Does anyone know how I disable this from happening. Strangely it does not happen all the time, just occasionally.

A. If you minimise the chat windows while you are not using them, then this should not happen. Instead it should flash orange on the taskbar to tell you there is a new message received. And if you have alert sounds on, then a sound should also play.

How do you install windows in a jeep wrangler hardtop?
Q. I have a 1997 jeep wrangler. I purchased a hardtop that needs windows installed in it. I have purchased used windows. How do you install the windows in this hardtop?

A. Short answer: I recommend taking it to an auto glass shop or a Jeep dealership. If you have the glass already, the installation should be fairly inexpensive. The procedure is covered in detail in the factory service manual (a very good investment for any do-it-yourself Jeep owner, and not too expensive on ebay). Glass installation is not trivial. I'll try to condense the instructions here: 1. Trim the urethane from the opening, leaving a 3mm level base. Place glass in the opening and make sure it fits and seats against the level urethane. Make alignment marks with a grease pencil 2. Remove the glass to a workbench, lay flat, inside-up. 3. Clean the glass with ammonia-based glass cleaner, then clean outer edge of glass with… [cont.]

What sort of window covering should I have for a wall of windows in a modern condo?
Q. We just bought a new modern condo with a wall of floor to ceiling windows. We have no idea how to cover them ... both to not be on show to the neighbors but also to block light when we're sleeping. Help!
Asked by team_slang - Fri Jul 28 11:30:56 2006 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Check out model homes in the community if it's brand new and see what they did. My husband works for a company that builds condos -- going through their models they usually hang a decorative rod 7 to 9 feet from the floor and hang curtain panels that touch the floor -- it looks gorgeous. If you really want to cover the top of the windows (I'm assuming it's very high?) you can use wood blinds for just the top half (if there's not a sill line half way down just hide the bottom behind the top of the curtain) or you can buy some of that window film/tint -- it comes in many designs as well as just a tint. If it was me I'd let the top alone and not worry about covering it. Good Luck!

Q. Up until last week, I was able to have two windows open, and able to log onto each of my yahoo accounts. Last week, it seemed to change. A. You might be having a problem related to the cookies that track your logins. Ifg all else fails, try using two different web browsers one for each login. For example, use Firefox for one login, and IE or Chrome for the other login.

How do I fix my front driver side automatic windows without going to a mechanic or dealership?
Q. I bought a 2007 Civic Sedan and my automatic windows (front driver side) is off alignment when I try to roll it up. The glass portion seems to pop out slightly and won't close properly. When this happens, the window doesn't fit into the slot. At first I didn't notice until I kept hearing airflow from that area when driving. If I push (force) the window inwards, it will close properly. As you could see, this is very inconvenient! Maybe there's a rock or some other obstruction where I can't see? Maybe somebody tried to break into the car by pulling the windows? Does anybody know what's wrong with the windows? How would I fix this? I want to see if I could fix this myself first before doing my last resort option of seeing… [cont.]

A. on a 2007 Civic you should still be under the manufacturers warranty. If you must do it yourself, then remove the door panel and watch the movement up and down in the track. You should be able to see where the problem is, and there are two adjustments on the track to correct this issue. If You cannot adjust it far enough then you must replace the track.

How to reduce heat from windows in summer?
Q. Is there a product or process(other than blinds or drapes) for reducing heat coming into my southwest home exposure. The light comes through 2 sliding doors & 8 windows and it gets hot in the afternoon. I want that same heat, however, in the colder months. A canopy or awning and window replacement is also out of the question. Is there window tinting?
