Moving to Tallahassee, FL after growing up in Kansas City. What Florida type beach stuff is around to enjoy?
Q. I'm very excited about my move coming up to Florida, I'll be living in Tallahassee. I've visited FLA many times but never Tallahassee. I love to hang out at the beach, surf a little, scuba dive a little on weekends. What beaches and areas to do these things are a reasonable distance for Tallahassee citizens?
Asked by Ryan H - Thu Oct 23 14:46:11 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Although Tallahassee is 18 miles from the Gulf, its 2-3 hours to the nice beaches. If you like to surf, you'll need to go to Jacksonville (3 hours east) or maybe Panama City (2 hours west). If you're looking for just pretty beaches (white sand, not a lot of trash), Mexico Beach and Destin (just west of Panama City) and great. If you're looking to party, meet a bunch of college kids and "get you some" Panama City is your best bet. For more things to do in Tallahassee go to www.morethanyouthought.co m

A. According to Mapquest Total Est. Time: 2 hours, 3 minutes Total Est. Distance: 121.67 miles But if you put in specific addresses the time and distance may change. Here is the link with driving directions. I have never been to Tallahassee but Panama City is great there are alot of things to do there.

A. It's a 4 hour drive using I-95 from Daytona to Jax and then I-10 to Tallahassee. That's easily the fastest route.

A. First you need to know that Tallahassee, Fla., which is the capital, is not on the ocean or gulf. It is an inland city, without a beach. It is the home of Florida State University, my alma mater. As far as beaches, I tend to enjoy the gulf or (western) coast. Sarasota is very nice. I recently rented a ground floor condo apt. in Lido Beach for a week. That's in the Sarasota area. It was inexpensive. It was right on the beach. My porch overhung the beach. It was called Limetree Beach Resort. If you prefer a hotel, there are many in the area.

Q. I'm 18, since Feb 19, and I want to go out of town with my boyfriend (we've been dating a year and a half) and his brother to Tallahassee,FL. I live in Palm Beach, FL so it isn't extremely far. My mom never lets me do anything and she treats me like a little girl still, it makes me mad. Is there anyway I could convince her to let me go? Just for 2 nightsss!

A. Yes, you are now an adult, but you are young adult. So please don't say "I'm an adult now mom,and I can do what I want". That would sign your fate at not going plus it would be a very tense weekend between you an your mother. What you should do is sit down an talk with your mom. Find out exactly why she doesn't want you to go. If it is you are still her little girl than could you an your mom work out a time where no matter what you are doing,or where you are at that you'll stop call and talk with her. Also reassure her that if something that you don't want to happen does in fact try to happen you'll immediately come home. Most of the time parents just want to know that their children will keep a smart head about them and stay safe. I'm… [cont.]

A. Likely not. When you don't live in her house, you get to make those decisions for yourself. If you're 18, you can move if it's that important to you. Luck

Q. I am planning a mega road trip in Florida, only places worth visiting. I came up with this list: Tallahassee Jacksonville Panama City St. Augustine Pensacola Daytona Beach Tampa/St. Petersburg Naples I already went to Miami and its surrounding areas along with The Keys. I know nothing about the above cities/towns but I keep hearing about them. What is worthy of a visit? Assume price is not a factor.

A. Not sure why you skipped Orlando - that's tourist Mecca (or maybe that's exactly why.) Pensacola/Panama City might be skippable right now...oil is starting to make an appearance on the beaches (not anything like further west, but still) Tallahassee doesn't have a whole lot to offer frankly, unless you're a 'Noles fan Can't think of much of anything around Naples offhand. Tampa/St. Pete has several pro/semi pro sports teams, a VERY nice aquarium, loads of great beaches, the Hard Rock casino and Busch Gardens Daytona has beaches, the Speedway (and the Daytona 500 Experience) and (during Bike Week) loads of bikers. Plus, the Space Coast isn't far south of there (final 2 shuttle missions this year). Jacksonville/St. Aug (the two 20 miles… [cont.]

A. Tallahassee has a lot of stinky paper manufacturing plants so you have to be careful where you stay or you'll be stunk out. Driving through is rough enough. I guess the people who live there get used to it? It's not like they're all over the city - just to the north, I think. Key Largo has a lot of personality but is *very* expensive. So I'm thinking Cocoa Beach would be a nice middle ground.

Trying to transfer into a Florida College with a major in Web Design?
Q. The school I'm trying to transfer into is Palm Beach Atlantic in West Palm Beach, Florida. The school I'm currently in is Tallahassee Community College, which in I'm in my last semester. The problem I have is that while I visited Open House in Palm Beach Atlantic, I found out something: That it would only take students into its Graphic Design program (which Web Design is a part of) if they have had a background in Art and Web Design. However, I only had Art and Graphic Design in High School (Which got me interested in Web Design in the first place), due to the notion that in TCC, I decided to only get the basic stuff (history, math, etc.) down, while I'll focus on my major in a university. During those years in TCC, I didn't know that I… [cont.]

A. It should be about $59 per each way and plan on getting at least a tank of gas when you are down there. You can also go to these websites and punch in some numbers they will give you a pretty good estimate of how much it will cost. add them up and take the average. Since gas prices are pretty much changing each day you might want to over budget at least a few dollars. You can also go to these websites to find the cheapest gas stations along your route: Hope this helps you have a great trip!

A. I like Orlando. It's our favorite vacation spot. Plenty to do and the weather in March is a nice break from the cold north. Least favorite would have to be Houston. I can't say I dislike it but just that it's my least favorite. I spent 7 days there for work a few years ago. Just wasn't impressed. Flat, lots of petrochemical plants and many corner stores selling cowboy boots.
