How do I prevent my swimming suit from deteriorating in the the chlorinated water?
Q. I swim competively. I swim in the longer kind of Speedo suit (Jammers) but I would like to know how to prevent it from deteriorating. Every night after swimming practice I always soak it in cold fresh water. But is there any other soulution or advice that you may have? Thanks in advance.

A. Aside from the one solution offered here by respondent #1, I suggest that you wash it immediately in cold water after you've finished (pls. don't wash it with strong detergent) and hung it to dry away from sunlight. Or buy Speedo Endurance+, this lasts for six months max.

What are swimming requirements in high school?
Q. If a high school has swimming as a requirement for graduation, what are the exact swim skills students need to demonstrate? Is it some basic strokes and ability to swim the length of the pool and back? Is diving a requirement? I know that is will vary from school to school, I'm only trying to get a general idea of how much swimming/diving students are expected to master before graduation. If you are responding with the swim requirements of a particular high school or school district, it would be great if you can mention which state the school is located in.

How many calories do you burn swimming?
Q. I recently dislocated my hip, my nerves are damaged etc. It actually came off the socket and they put it back in. I have had problems with my right leg and hip for a long time now. It is painful to walk, do regular workouts but I can swim. Swimming is not painful and I was wondering how much do you have to swim to burn calories? The last thing I want to do right now with summer is pack on the weight, get out of shape and not moving my leg seems to cause trouble. Anyone have ideas?
Asked by Ann - Mon Jun 11 10:26:31 2007 - - 8 Answers - 2 Comments

A. Swimming is a great way to burn calories and tone muscles. It's great because it's zero impact and it works the entire body. You'll not only work your legs (from kicking) and arms (from the strokes) but you'll tone your back, chest, abs, glutes, all over! Try to vary your strokes, and do 2 or 3 different ones each session. Since I'm not good at butterfly, I always do freestyle, breast stroke, and back stroke. Here's an example of what I do when I want to swim for an exercise. Oh, and when I'm describing my routine, a "lap" is "there and back" and a length is just one way. I start out with a nice-paced freestyle lap or two to get warmed up. Then I'll do the same with breast stroke. Medium paced, there and back, twice. Then I… [cont.]

How do I personally get a good cardiovascular swimming workout?
Q. During the winter, I swim all the time on a swim team, so I am a decent swimmer and I get a good workout then. I would like to swim off-season to get in shape, not necessarily to work on my swimming, but more to get in good cardiovascular shape and to lose some weight. So, does anyone have a good workout I could follow? Thanks!!
Asked by Helen W - Sat Aug 1 14:03:28 2009 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. I have that same problem: What to do on the off season. Well, I go biking every other day for 45 minutes to an hour. Then I weight lifts. On the other days, I run, and then weight lifts. With the running and biking it helps keep you in shape for swim. When you start up again, you will feel like you are really out of shape, but you are just using different muscles. Also, do ab workouts, like crunches, and then leg lifts and v-sits, pikes and bikes. If you strengthen up your abs, your turns will be faster, and your times will improve.

How early can an infant begin swimming lessons?
Q. Hi Moms My daughter is 4 months old right now. I am hoping to put her in swimming lessons this summer when she will be 6-7 months. I was wondering if thats too young for an infant to begin swimming? Aside from the swimming itself, what about the pool being a source of infections? Thanks!
Asked by NewMommie - Tue Mar 10 10:02:26 2009 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I had my first daughter in "lessons" at 6 months and it was a waste of money. Basically these "lessons" are just to get the baby comfortable with the water. Even though the water was fairly warm, her lips were always blue by the time the lesson was over. I think you could do the same with your baby without PAYING for lessons. You take your baby in the water with you and sing songs, dance around, let her splash. You don't really need a swim teacher showing you how to do that. Hopefully the pool you are in uses the necessary amount of chlorine to rid potential harmful bacteria. I think you daughter is safe in that respect but just don't let her drink the water!

Asked by ryank - Tue Jun 5 22:50:27 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Most children learn to swim underwater on their own because it is easier to sink than to keep yourself above the water. Make it a point to get better at swimming with your head above the waterline. Technically you CAN swim but you are doing yourself a lot more good if you learn to swim above water as well. Swimming under water usually occurs because the swimmer in question cannot hold his or her head above the water in a buoyant position. Those swimmers usualy put their feet down to take a breath and cannot tread or stay afloat. This is a very risky situation because it provides a false sense of confidence in the underwater swimmer if you say he or she CAN swim. Technically yes, that person can propel him or herself through the water.… [cont.]

A. A swimming workout can be a refreshing way to get or stay in shape. It provides an awesome full body aerobic workout that tones muscles, improves strength and flexibility, increases circulation, controls weight and enhances body contours. Swimming workouts offer you a low impact activity that can easily be tailored to match your abilities. These workouts can also be a good way to gain cardiovascular stamina. The secret to a good swimming exercise program is to work with the water. To accomplish this, you need to swim using your abs, hips and shoulders to propel yourself through the water. To know why water exercise works so well, you need to understand water's unique properties. In water, your body has almost no gravity. You're relieved… [cont.]

A. Yes, most swimming programs in High School I know about dont cut people for swimming. I think in a tryout, they see where they put you for practice, and where your skill level is, whether you should go in the fast, medium, or slow lane. It may be different for your school, but when I first started, I had no idea how to swim, in fact my first month was basically swimming lessons, but I ended up improving by leaps and bounds, and lettered my Sophmore year, and by the time I was a Junior and Senior I had become a valuable contributor on the team, even making the District finals my senior year in the Breaststroke. So I say go for it!

Q. I want to tone my body, but I don't like running or walking on the treadmill or outdoors. I enjoy playing in the swimming pool. I play in a 11ft pool where I am constantly moving my body to stay afloat. I also do 2-3 laps. I am learning how to dive. My heart rate goes up and I feel tired at the end. I have a good weight and I eat healthy. Would doing this help me get toned? Do I need to do weights? Thank you.

A. if you want to lose weight, gain endurance, gain a bit of strength, and tighten your muscles, there is (overall and for the last one) no equal to swimming. It works nearly every muscle in your body very well, as well as your respiratory system and has a cardio aspect. It can be very slow and relaxing or fast and rigorous. If you want the things i said, swimming is definitely the way to go (especially if you enjoy it). If you just want to bulk up, you should do weights instead. You might also want to supplement swimming with abs work (crunches/situps/bicycles /leg lifts) and weights, if you want muscles.

A. It appears that you're not familiar with the Fahrenheit scale. To change from Celcius (C) to Fahrenheit (F) use the following formula: 1.8C - 32 = F To change from F to C: F-32 multiply by 5 divide by 9 = C (note: multiplying by 5 and dividing by 9 is the same as multiplying by the fraction 5/9. OR use the rounded decimal, 0.556 [really 0.555~, get it?])

How does a swimming pool salt ionizer work?
Q. A friend of mine has a "saltwater" swimming pool, it does not require the addition of any chlorine. Does anyone know how the chemistry of the ionizer works, ie how does it convert simple NaCl to hypochlorite? Is the chlorine level in this type of pool lower than a chlorinated pool? Is the level of Chlorine gas lower?
Asked by atomicdoug171 - Fri Aug 15 23:24:21 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. To start off with, chlorine is a salt. All that a salt water generator does is convert salt, by a form of electrolysis via a cell in the plumbing, into a low constant dose of chlorine gas that dissolves in the pool water to become sodium hypochlorite. The cell looks like the plates in a lead acid car battery. Water flows between the plates and an electric current passes between the plates. Gas forms on the plates and dissolves into the pool water return. Generally, yes, the chlorine is a little lower than in a traditionally chlorinated pool because it is constant dose. It doesn't have the spikes in levels. Often there's no need to even put the units into their 100% output or "shock" setting. By chlorine gas, I'm assuming you mean… [cont.]

Of course, depending on the amount you swim, your body type, and whether you incorporate other weight training/exercise, that could affect how you look. The health benefits include improved cardiovascular health and increased stamina. Enjoy it and good luck training!

Asked by Uniqueeee :] - Tue May 4 20:31:44 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I suggest you shouldn't go swimming for a while. Your belly button piercing will definitely get infected once you swim even in non-chlorinated water. The beach has saltwater. I think salt will make your belly button infected. Well, I don't have a medical background but I do know that salt dries up the skin (like mummies). It might be bad for a newly-pierced belly button. You said you'll be swimming in the lake. In my opinion, lake water isn't that clean (of course, it also has impurities) and there might be some nasty stuff in the lake that might get into your belly button. So, don't swim first okay? And maybe you should also ask for the opinion of the one who'll do the piercing. And please, tell this to your mother as early as… [cont.]
