A. Some assist in supporting victims of crime, accidents and the families. They also help people bought in with no place to live, no benefits and counseling relatives when the patient dies. Being a social worker in an emergency room , especially on night duty is a very stressful job, and you need a strong stomach and character to deal with people in a time of personal tragedy and crisis. You will deal with reporting abused children and also telling the parents. You will also have to finish your work and leave it at the door if you want to not burn out, as you will meet many people who due to circumstances, budget, time restraints and job limits you are unable to help even though you know that you were there last chance. A very important part… [cont.]

How could a social worker work with a contemporary social problem?
Q. can someone help me with this question (from an application form for a social work program): Discuss how you believe a social worker could work with a contemporary social problem of interest to you?
Asked by B - Sun Aug 23 14:20:26 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A contemporary social problem would be homelessness, unemployment, drug addiction, single parenthood, discrimination due to ethnicity, socioeconomic class, gender. Pick one and discuss how you would approach the issue; would you intervene on an individual level (micro or clinical) or on a broader level (macro or community development)?

How can i become a social worker in Georgia? What are the basic requirements?
Q. I am currently getting my bachelor's in psychology online. I work as a Paralegal but my life's calling is to work with soldiers who have PTSD or other such problems. Therefore if my research is correct I would need to become a clinical social worker. How exactly do I go about that?
Asked by blahblahblahblah - Tue Jun 16 17:16:26 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I am not sure what the requirements are in the USA but I have a masters degree in social work with a clinical concentration in Canada. Generally, you need a masters degree to do any sort of clinical therapy and I doubt it is any different in the States. An aside though, social work is a VERY stressful profession and I would strongly advise anyone to work on your own personal issues BEFORE you get into the profession. Burn out rates are exceptionally high in this field and particularly working with trauma victims. Good luck!

I am a social worker who wants to help at-risk youth. Does anyone know of a job for me in NYC?
Q. Have worked with youth involved in criminal justice system, in foster care and adoption, independent living and am very comfortable as a social worker. I am also an athlete and can help youth from a sports and a social service position.
Asked by Andre B - Wed Jan 16 15:11:13 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. With your talents, why not check out the social service agencies in your area. You can try United Way, they have lists of organizations that do that type of work. Maybe the school system in your area could use your talent in educating the youth in their school.. Maybe start an after school program for high schoolers to keep them out of gangs and drugs. Start a sports after school program. Maybe you could write for grants to start this.

Q. i know that a psychologist goes to college for five extra years, and a social worker only goes for two. but apparently they're the "same thing" so why the extra years then? whats the difference? what are a social workers limitations that a psychologist can fulfill?
Asked by <3 - Thu Dec 18 22:55:54 2008 - - 7 Answers - 2 Comments

A. Actually...I'm getting ready to attend Graduate School, and my advisor who is a Psychologist says that there isn't much difference in the two...if you are a Licensed Clinical Social Worker...LCSW. The only difference is Psychologists have more knowledge about Medicine and Denistry...but while you're attempting to become a Clinical Licensed Social Worker, you will also learn some about Medicine and Denistry. But even if you're not licensed...the knowledge you acquire is still similar. I think someone who answered the question took the time to name a few different types of Psychologists...well there are also many types of Social Workers: Mental Health and Public Service Social Workers, Mental Health and Substance Abuse Social Workers, Child, [cont.]

What kinds of jobs can a social worker get?
Q. I am thinking of becoming a social worker but i'm unsure what job opportunities there will be once I finish the degree. Can anyone give me examples (as many as possible) where a social worker may work? Also do you have to specialise in one area? Are there similar jobs available where I would be helping people, but the degree isn't necessary?

A. Many professions and/or jobs require social skills in dealing with customers/clients issues. Being a Social Worker with a degree gives you more options and selections as to where and who you help and work for. Many Employers prefer hiring a Social Worker with a degree rather than someone who has just worked their way up the ladder. The reason being that college gives you training through it's course and course requirements that prepare you better for issues that will face on the job. Teaching you time constraints, ethical issues, reporting issues, confidentiality, research skills, intervention and prevention skills as well. Where as just working your way up you have to learn through trial and error. Yes there are specialties that you can… [cont.]

A. I know some drug counselors are reformed drug users, so it may be possible for you to become a social worker. Maybe you could call different social workers, explain your situation and see what they say. They would probably know if your record would bar you from employment. It really, really sucks that screwing up just once can ruin your future; we all make mistakes.

A. Hi Have you considered doing an access course at your local college? You can do this over one year or two. I completed the access course over two years this course will give you the necessary qualifications to go onto university, and it should be free for you as you have not got any qualifications. I am just finishing my 2nd year of a Foundation Degree in Health and Social Care so that I can do Social Work, the way that I have done it has been a long winded way but it has given me more insight what to expect. I have a hearing problem and I get help in my lessons, and I can keep up and have fun as well. Give it a try you may even like learning. Hope this has been of some to you, and good luck for the future.

What would I have to study at university to become a social worker?
Q. Recently I've been thinking about becoming a social worker. I do A-levels English, law and ICT. I don't know if these would be much help, i mean the law would help a little i guess. But are these the wrong kind of subjects? Should I have done something like health and social care. I've already mucked up one year so can't afford to drop out and change courses again. Whats the actual subject called to become a social worker i mean is it just "health and social care"

A. Hello Social workers are professionally qualified staff who must be registered with the appropriate regulatory body, in order to practice. The current training is an honours degree in social work although as with all professions, this is regularly reviewed and may change over time. Perhaps you ve already done so but if not, try contacting the professional and regulatory body for Social Work in your area for information on a social work career and guidance on entry requirements and relevant work experience. These may vary slightly so as you don t say where you live or where you wish to study, I ll give you contact details for all four UK nations: - Care Council for Wales - Northern Ireland Social Care Council (NISCC) -… [cont.]
