Lighting or illumination is the deliberate application of light to achieve some aesthetic or practical effect. Lighting includes use of both artificial light sources such as lamps and natural illumination of interiors from daylight. Daylighting (through windows, skylights, etc.) is often used as the main source of light during daytime in buildings given its low cost. Artificial lighting represents a major component of energy consumption, accounting for a significant part of all energy consumed worldwide. Artificial lighting is most commonly provided today by electric lights, but gas lighting, candles, or oil lamps were used in the past, and still are used in certain situations. Proper lighting can enhance task performance or aesthetics, while there can be energy wastage and adverse health effects of poorly designed lighting. Indoor lighting is a form of fixture or furnishing, and a key part of interior design. Lighting can also be an intrinsic component of landscaping.

What is the best outdoor lighting system to protect your house from burglars and crime?
Q. How have you set up your outdoor lighting system? Including the garage lights and the lights you might have in your flower beds which "spotlight" your house. Any tips would be helpful as there is an increase in burglaries and car thefts in my area (our cars have been broken into 2x in our driveway). Please HELP! P.S. We have car alarms but the thieves are pretty clever here, no alarms ever go off when cars are broken into. I don't know how they do it, our cars are always locked & alarms off. P.S. A. I have a motion activated light by my back garage door. I installed lights on top of my patio cover that I can turn on if someone is on the hillside above my home. I have landscape lights in front, back and both sides. I use the spot lights to highlight recessed corners and the fence. I made it look like the spotlights on the fence are highlighting some decorative items I hung on it, but it is really so that burglars know they cannot get over the fence without being seen. I also keep the trees and bushes pruned under the height of the windows so that they do not provide an obscurity that criminals could use to enter. A very bright motion detecting light above the garage door not only gives visitors light to get up to the front entry,… [cont.]

A. Optimally, three strobes (primary, secondary, and back-fill). You can get away with just one strobe and a reflector. Continuous lights -- aka, hot lights -- are cheaper and do provide you with a view of what you're doing right away, but they're just that: hot. Get them too close to your diffusers and you'll be buying new diffusers. Get them too close to your subject and they'll be sweating. I've become quite fond of the continuous lights using daylight-balanced compact fluourescent bulbs. Not as much heat, so you can still use softboxes on them. (Example linked below.) Lighting can be tricky, so play around with it and learn what you're doing before going live with it. A good light meter will help, too, since you'll have to work… [cont.]

What is the best yet affordable lighting set up for a saltwater tank?
Q. I have a 46 gallon bow front salt water tank. The lights i have on it are a Coral Life light (1/2 actinic) and the standard lousy one that comes with most tanks. I have some mushrooms and zooanthids that are doing fine, but I want better lighting so they will grow / spread faster.

A. Which coralLife light do you have??? Is it Power compact??? How many watts are the bulbs??? I use a CoralLife Power compact fixture on a 15gal nano Reef that has 1 X 10k 65W white and 1X 65W Actinic =130w Zoos and Shrooms don't need a lot of light but if you're planning on getting any LPS or SPS corals, you should have at least 5watts per gal. A 250w Metal Halide light (With a 12k bulb) would be the BEST light for that tank and you would be able to keep any coral you want. Unless you can put together a MH light yourself, they can be Expensive to buy.

Some of these farmers also have lighting Luckily one of the farm workers was there when I stopped to look and take pics He reckoned they use 250W and 400W globes about 5 per pole But these poles are very far apart I would estimate 300 meters apart So it doesn t take much light to help a hop plant along On the other hand I used two 20W fluorescent globes last
