When installing new cabinets is there a space between cabinet and ceiling?
Q. We are planning to have new cabinets installed and everything we look at has spaces between ceiling and cabinet top. Is there a reason for this or is it just for looks. Our old cabinets were against the ceiling.

A. The normal ceiling height in houses is 8 feet. There are actuallt two different stock size upper cabinets you can purchase. 30 inch high cabinets will leave a 12 inch space between cabinet top and ceiling. Some people put in what is called a dropped ceiling (that is a short, 12 inch, wall is built between the top of the cabinet) to cover this open space or they leave that space open. The other cabinet size is 42 inches that goes all the way to the ceiling. Naturally these are more expensive but they also provide more storage space. Your answer depends on your budget, and the look you are trying to achieve. In our house I built the cabinets to go to the ceiling because I believe it's a classier look, more finished, provides more storage and… [cont.]

I have laminate cabinets in my kitchen, how would i go about painting them?
Q. The previous owner added cheap looking laminate cabinets on one side of my kitchen that clash pretty badly with the other cabinets. I want to paint all my cabinets the same color. Are there any special steps i need to take in order to paint the laminate cabinets?

A. Lightly sand, then use a primer (I prefer Kilz), then paint. Make sure you also paint a clear acrylic polyurethane also, so you can scrub and clean them later.

Installing custom cabinets, ceramic tile, and high end appliances. Is a rolling small island cheesy?
Q. I have a small L shaped wall 17"deep by 3' wide. I don't want to waste any space, so I have had several ideas, a wall of cabinets seems to "busy", and if I just install a working countertop with cone lights overhead you would be working looking at a wall. I thought about asking the cabinet maker to put good locking wheels and 3 cabinets underneath, and then we could roll it into the center of the kitchen for serving or working and then lock it back against the wall when not in use. As I am typing I am also considering the wear and tear on the wall... I have never heard of this done. any ideas?

A. I wouldn't suggest a rolling island. Cheesy doesn't begin to describe it. Why not do a counter top in the L-shaped area with a decorative tile back splash & recessed lighting in the ceiling. It would give you extra prep room and create a little decorative nook to add to the room. Maybe a small built in bookshelf to house cookbooks or a pretty wine rack above the or to the side of the work area.

my kitchen cabinets are an ugly gray color. What can we do to change the color. The top cabinets are all?
Q. wood. The bottom cabinets are not real wood. We have already thrown the bottom cabinets away.

A. are you wanting wood cabinets or painted, if painted just give a lite sand and paint, if you want the wood look strip them and then sand them and stain, a lot of work to get that to work, also keep in mind different wood will look different with the stain on them you can leave the bottom wood and just paint the top cabinets. a nice look if you like country or primitive is to paint the cabinets a solid color then to sand them a little use for example brown then paint the door brown let it dry use crackle finish then use off white and go over it you can distress the bottom cabinets and stain them if you need samples of this look just let me know I will send pictures it is really nice with any counter top or you can have open storage on the… [cont.]

Any way to add cabinet door knobs to cabinets with no holes drilled without going to that expense?
Q. I have kitchen cabinets with no door pulls that are hard to open but don't really want the expense of drilling holes in every cabinet face and installing knobs. Are there any products out there that allow you to do this -- like magentic knobs or pulls?
Asked by Hopeful - Mon Aug 20 10:07:41 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Last I checked drilling holes didn't cost anything...Knobs are cheap as long as you buy ones that are in stock. Buy or make a template so you put the hole in the same place for each door.

Do those magnetic cabinet latches work for keeping toddlers out of the cabinets?
Q. We just got new cabinets and I don't want to drill into them. Do you have to drill with the magnetic ones and do they work?
Asked by Sport - Sat Jun 14 18:56:44 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. They are not to be trusted even tghoughthey may help. The toddler's life and welfare are too important. Besides, the strength of the magnets is uncertain and I would not take a chance that the cabinet truly closed each time. There are other devices available that are effective without having to drill.

A. A drawer base is going to cost more then a cabinet base simply because it has drawers. The price is just about double.

How/where to install kitchen cabinets: directly on wood subfloor or on the tile?
Q. My kitchen has been gutted. The walls, the electrical, and the wood subfloor has been preped. Should the base cabinets be installed directly onto the wood subfloor (my house has a 3 to 4 foot crawl space...not concrete slab), or should the kitchen floor be tiled first and then install the base cabinets on top of the tile? What is the proper way to do it? Thanks in advance for your answers.

What color cabinets would look best with light oak floors?
Q. I am planning on buying unfinished cabinets and painting/staining them either white or a darker color, which do you think would be most appealing in a small kitchen?

A. If it's a small kitchen, I would go with white cabinets if you had white appliances. It will make the room appear a little bigger and be a nice contrast for the oak floors. Get some cool handles and drawer pulls and it will look very chic.

How do I mount kitchen cabinets on a concrete block wall?
Q. I have a duplex that was built in the early sixties, it is a concrete block house. I am getting ready to install new kitchen cabinets and I have run into a dilemma, that being 2 of the walls that have cabinets on them are plasterboard over the exterior block. What is the best way to mount them without having to worry about them falling off the wall. I was thinking of using Tapcon screws but I'm worries about how they will look. Any advice would be wonderful. thanks in advance all.

A. you could drill in expansion anchors or install furring strips with the masonry screws and then mount the cabinets to the furring. the problem there is that it spaces the cabinetry further into the room and you'll need to put false panels on the ends to cover the furring strips.. also, it could affect your countertop depths..

How can I make press-board cabinets last longer?
Q. I just bought 2 press-board cabinets with doors for my garage. I know that they are not the best cabinets, but they are affordable. I just need some ideas to help them last longer. Any suggestions for reinforcing them?

A. Mount them to a wall if possible, an/or screw them together from the inside. Small wooden triangles in each corner could help, but you will have to pre-drill and glue them in.

I have heard that I need to buy 3 colors - 1) a darker color for the base, 2) a middle color for the wood grain, and 3) a light color for the finish. Do I paint the cabinet the base color, then use the wood graining tool to paint the middle color, and then finally finish it with the lightest color.

A. Yes, you've got the right idea. Make sure you let each coat fully cure before applying the next one. And its helpful to seal it all up with a clear coat at the very end - this will prevent fading and make it easier to clean. Edited to add some links; the third one is a video from HGTV

Where to buy the best stock kitchen cabinets?
Q. I have a condo that I am going to rent out and need to replace the kitchen cabinets. Where should I go to get the best deal on stock cabinets that look good, are durable, and are reasonably priced?
Asked by SmittyJ - Fri May 19 14:15:43 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Since you are definitely out to make money not loose it, don't go to any place like a home center to buy them. Find a wholesale distributor to buy them from all you usually need is a company name(just make one up they will give you a cash account)and a pulse to buy them. That's where the pros buy them and you can get about 10-20% discount on them also and if you set your account up right you may not have to pay taxes if you can justify to them you are a contractor of some sort. Hope this helps.

When remodeling a kitchen, should you tile under the cabinets and appliances?
Q. I am tearing out all of the cabinets and removing all of the appliances from the room regardless. I have seen people set the cabinets on the subfloor and tile up to them as well as tile underneath before setting the cabinets. Same with appliances. Which is the proper way, assuming the room is completely cleared out to start with. I do understand the added cost of tiling the entire floor under cabinets and appliances, however I am asking for the correct way, not necessiarly the most cost effective way. Thanks.

A. Good question, no easy answer. If it is not too cost prohibitive I would put the tile over the entire floor. Overall the tiling job will be easier and you will not have to worry about or plan for as many tile transitions. If you tile and grout the entire floor first it will look natural if there is only a small section of tile next to one of the cabinet edges. Trying to cut small slivers of tile and get the grout seams clean can be a real pain if you decide to tile around the cabinets. (Just remember to leave enough open space where any new plumbing pipes may need to be run). Also, believe it or not it can be a selling point. The first thing most new home buyers want to change is the cabinets. Having the entire floor covered saves a… [cont.]
