In this article, the first usage is generally intended unless otherwise specified.

Buildings come in a wide amount of shapes and functions, and have been adapted throughout history for a wide number of factors, from building materials available, to weather conditions, to land prices, ground conditions, specific uses and aesthetic reasons.

Buildings serve several needs of society – primarily as shelter from weather and as general living space, to provide privacy, to store belongings and to comfortably live and work. A building as a shelter represents a physical division of the human habitat into the inside (a place of comfort and safety) and the outside (a place that at times may be harsh and harmful). Ever since the first cave paintings, buildings have also become objects or canvasess of artistic expression. In recent years, interest in sustainable planning and building practices has also become part of the design process of many new buildings.

How is the Watermark Cambridge building? Any noise problems from construction work nearby?
Q. We are thinking about moving into Watermark Cambridge building, but are not able to have a showing in advance as we are in Germany at the moment. Any opinions about this building? The pictures of the building look great, but on Google Streetview we saw a big construction going on right next door. Does anyone know, if this construction is finished by now? Or does anyone actually live in this building and can tell me, if there is any noise problem with the construction site nearby. Thanks a lot!

A. I live right across the sreet! There is construction going on but they are finishing up and should be done in a couple of months.. But I doubt you would be able to hear anything from inside of your apartment anyway. P.S. The pics on google maps were taken almost a year ago so the area probably looks a bit different now.

Suggestions on building a new home?
Q. OK-I know that I have asked this question or something similiar to it many times before, BUT, I want to be thoroughly researched before we start. We are in the planning stage of builidng a new home. We have 2 children, ages 4 and 7 who are very active. We have met once with our designer and have basically come up with the fact that we want a 2-story "Farmhouse" type home. We are going to be building on a 200+ acre farm, and wanted to stick with the theme. I want to build as much house as I possible can within my budget. Does anyone have any suggestions on things that I can put into the house? Any suggestions on upgrades? Any suggestions on where we can find materials, etc. at discounted prices without sacrificing quality. I want this… [cont.]

A. Salvage yards are a great resource. Almost every city has some type of salvage yard that specializes in doors, windows and fixtures. My brother in law lucked up and found some great old school doors with etched glass numbers on them every door is different but it adds to the charm of their cabin. If you can get away and go to Brimfield, MA Huge array of stuff. Find a dealer that has tons of doors or windows and make him/her a cash deal. These older pieces are usually of solid wood and built a million times better than some of the stuff on the market today. There are tile outlets all over the place as well. We have a great flooring place here in Atlanta called Floor and Decor. I bought some 16" slate tiles for a little over… [cont.]

When building a garden pond, must all the EPDM be coverered with rocks - all the way to the bottom?
Q. I'm building a waterfall that empties into a pond (that's where the pump and skimmer are.) Some people say that I need to cover the EPDM with rocks - but the sides of the pond are steep, even with the ledges that I dug into them. Is it okay just to put rocks around the perimeter of the EPDM? Will the EPDM get damaged otherwise? What other materials besides rocks can I use?

A. No it is not recommended to fill the pond with rocks as it makes normal cleaning difficult. I have had my pond for almost 9 years now and the liner is still good. If you want the look of rocks in the pond, they make liner material that is gray with a pebble pattern. It's best to use liner made for ponds as the surface is ideal for microorganism growth which keeps the pond healthy. Make sure to not build it in direct sun, it needs a good amound of shade to keep algae from taking over.
