If 20 to 30 years ago Malaysian can speak English with British accent, can younger generation in Malaysia?
Q. do the same thing under the current education system. To make things worst Tv1,2 and 3 are showing more Malay programmed rather than English programmed.
Asked by Super sapien - Sat May 2 11:28:47 2009 - - 17 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Under current system, No ! - possible only if there are real British teachers to teach our children from kindergarten till at least form 5 in all subjets, (like 50 years ago)...and the medium of instruction must the "Queen's English" ...because there are different "dialects" of English, e.g. Southern, Midlands, Norhtern...even Southern Englanders have trouble understanding Northern Englanders... However, our youngsters can learn any accent from the foreign programs on TV or video disks faster than any "education system" ...

A. In general, Malaysians speak good English. It is better on the west coast than the east and better in cities rather than the countryside. There are some uniquely Malaysian phrases and words which are considered unusual to other speakers of English. But this is normal even between English speaking nations and the meaning is fairly evident. They do have an unusual fondness for putting 'lah' on the end of their sentences. I am not sure why they do this lah.

A. Bundy, you are worse than Dr No. A doctorate degree manufactured from a xerox machine? Ha ha ha. Anyway I strongly feel that this is a valid question from Annie that warrants some credits based on National interest. It was a statement made by a minister holding high position in government, was reported in the local newspapers and also picked up by some in the region too. To me, English is an International language tools to do business with the rest of today`s world. Look at China, they send thousands of their best to States and elsewhere to master the language. Japan did that years ago so did France. Maybe, like someone mentioned above, this minister might not be strong in the English language perhaps this is the reason why he wants… [cont.]

Should this word be part of Malaysian English vocabulary?
Q. badawi [baa-daa-wee] (noun/verb): To start something full of promise but end in disappointment, failure and/or disaster. Eg: 'I'm trusting you to perform this task well; don't do a badawi, ok?' 'Whatever I do, I will always find a way to badawise it.' 'France badawied their Euro 2008 campaign. England pre-badawied theirs, while Italy were guilty of over-badawification.' There are possible plans underway to apply to the Oxford, Webster and even Kamus Dwibahasa DBP to include this new word for their 2009 dictionary: Stranger OAB, Badawi is actually his surname. Pak Lah's father's name is Ahmad, thus Abdullah bin Ahmad Badawi. Just the same with the reason to use the word Bush instead of George.

A. Perhaps its good that you do some basic reasearch on Malaysia before actually landing here. But in a nutshell,we live in a multi racial society. In the following racial ratio( rough) 7:2:1 ie, Malays, Chinese,Indians, others. There is a lot of Indians working in Malaysia, they serve both ends of the spectrum. From the bottom,we have the, labourers, waiters, foo d servers, cleaners( usually from Bangladesh) to profesionals,( Engineers, teachers, lawyer s,etc) From my experience, most are also from the South. Most Malaysians generally speak good english,if not we wont be able to answer your question here on Yahoo answers. In fact,we dont speak English with a certain slang. So you gotta be careful about that bit.Oh,we also dont move our heads around, when… [cont.]

A. yes. they shorten long vowel sounds and reduce dipthongs (dipthongs are double vowel sounds) if you combine the shortened vowels with other common pron problems of malaysians, you get a very clipped speech pattern and foreigners might not be able to catch all the words
