can you tell me about Ozone Generators that are Sold as Air Cleaners? Are they good for asthma?
Q. I'm trying to buy an air purifier and there are many of them out there...why the ozone generateors have a bad reputation?
Asked by Beverly Hills Real Estate Agent - Mon Apr 2 00:50:56 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. According to the scientific research ozone can be quite harmful you can look at what the environmental protection agency has to say at this site: How is Ozone Harmful? The same chemical properties that allow high concentrations of ozone to react with organic material outside the body give it the ability to react with similar organic material that makes up the body, and potentially cause harmful health consequences. When inhaled, ozone can damage the lungs (see - "Ozone and Your Health" - www.epa.gov/airnow/brochu re.html). Relatively low amounts can cause chest pain, coughing, shortness of breath, and, throat irritation. Ozone may also worsen chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma and compromise the ability of the body to fight… [cont.]

Q. i always look for jobs in yahoo hotjobs and always see "dryer vent & air duct cleaners" classified ads in many of the cities listed. just wanted to know if this is a scam as i am considering applying for the job.

A. Well, it's always possible that any ad is a scam, but "dryer vent & air duct cleaning" is a bona fide job. I'm sure most ads you see for this job are valid. Some could be a scam, since any ad could be a scam, but I don't think the jobs listed in this category are any more likely to be a scam than any other ad. -

A question about electronic air cleaners?
Q. The house my wife and I purchased has a Triton Electronic Air Cleaner attached to the furnace. I know little about them. I was told to remove the inner unit periodically, and wash it in the dishwasher. I've done this on a six month bases. The first couple of years, the unit would sometimes make an electrical snapping noise when dirt, etc. came in contact. The unit no longer seems to do this. Is it no longer working? The high voltage indicator lights are both on.
Asked by kch05 - Wed Jun 16 23:56:29 2010 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First problem is that you are throwing good money after bad. Electronic air cleaners are energy hogs and actually produce ozone within a month of picking up dust. My suggestion would be to remove the guts (cell) and replace the prefilter with an Electro Breeze air cleaner from The Electro Breeze produces no ozone and is 97% efficient down to 0.3 microns. You change the media pad every 2-4 months in less than 1 minute and the pads cost about $12 each. Lots of our customers have done the same with the same unit and are very happy with the results. I hope this helps.

Do home air cleaners work for air pollution (such as car emmisions) as well as dander/pollen/allergens?
Q. I've already read that many popular air purifiers actually emitt a lot of ozone, but for the ones that do not, do they work against city air pollution that comes from industrial work or is it just against organic allergens?
Asked by jlsherma1213 - Mon Jul 2 21:14:40 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I believe it depends on what brand and which filter you buy. Each one uses a different method of filtration and some have combinations of several methods in the same purifier. Here are three different ones I found (the links are below). The Sharper Image Hybrid GP Germicidal Air Purifier reduces bacteria, mold spores and viruses in the air, and converts ozone to oxygen. The Friedrich C-90A Electronic Air Cleaner employs three different levels of allergen and irritant removal and claims to remove tobacco smoke, pollen, and dust. The AllerAir Air Purifiers help clean the air of particles, gases, odors, smoke, mold, and various pollutants. It claims to be ideal for someone who "wants features commonly ordered for use in hostile… [cont.]

A. Look in one of yours to see. If mold is there then attention is needed. 30 plus years in my house and have never cleaned the ducts. I do clean the air return space under the unit and try to change the filter regularly. I think you can buy a spray to seal dust in ducting if necessary.

Vent cleaners: some blow air, some suck air, and some use rotary brushes. Which is best?
Q. I have to hire vent-cleaners for our Co-op. We have 32 units/dryer vents, plus a laundry room with 3 dryers. There is no record of vents being cleaned in 20 years. Some vents exit on roof, some on side of building. Some people have dryers hooked up, some do not. What kind of vent-cleaning do you recommend? Thank you
Asked by augustus - Sat Nov 17 06:28:40 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Been looking into it. Wisdom so far... for rigid ducting the powered brushes are the most aggressive if the ducts are up to it. Just blowing or vacuuming is better than nothing esp if there is flex as well as rigid duct. Some outfits have video cameras that can "crawl "around for "before & after " proof of work After cleaning the ducts should be blown out & if necessary to be vacuumed from inside they had better do a good job of trapping dust & cleaning up. So far have found only one outfit I can afford for a one family home w/ forcet hot air & AC...around $500 because of flex supply ducts, bath exhausts & dryer vent Best regards

Q. are ozone air cleaners effective in ridding apts. of the smell of cigarettes?
Asked by downonherluck - Mon Nov 6 20:33:59 2006 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Generally not. They more move the smell than get rid of it, and you don't want a smell that is sunk into your carpet because people with sensitive noses still can smell it. I know, I have one of those noses. A safe environmental alternative is a product called Smoke Free by EnviroCorp. It's amazing, the tiniest little spritz (you can buy it aerosol or just in a liquid that you spritz) actually eliminates the odor and it does NOT return. It doesn't leave an artificial or perfumey smell, the undesirable smell is just gone.

has anyone used those air powered drain cleaners?
Q. you know, those gadgets like they sell on HSN or QVC which look like a pistol, and force a quick blast of air into a clogged drain. just wondering if they really work on tough clogs before i pick one up. tnx
Asked by mark n - Thu Jan 18 22:53:13 2007 - - 4 Answers - 1 Comments

A. This type of drain "Cleaner" should not be used. A plunger or drain "Snake" are much more effective. If you think about it, blasting air down the drain is more likely to push the clog tighter into the drain rather than unclogging it. A plunger will push and pull the clog to free it and a snake will push through the clog and break it up.

Are compressed air//dust cleaners//computer cleaners supposed to have 'stuff'' in them?
Q. I saw one at my supermarket but when i shook it i heard like a liquid... is it the wrong one because i want a kind that blows out air to clean dust and the insides of my computer thx ;)
Asked by Crayons - Sat Mar 27 23:28:52 2010 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The liquid you hear is the compressed gas that will be shot out - it isn't air - you would need a very heavy walled tank to compress enough air to be useful. The ones I have contain difluoroethane which compresses to a liquid under moderate pressure.

Questions about electrostatic air cleaners?
Q. Electrostatic air cleaners, also called electrostatic precipitators, are used in many industries to help reduce air pollution. These cleaning devices are installed inside smokestacks to remove particles of dust, soot ash, and other polluting materials in smoke so that they don t reach the air we breathe. The cleaners work by using the forces of electric attraction and repulsion. The charged particles in smoke are attracted to collection plates that have the opposite electric charge. The particles remain on the plates instead of moving out into the air. The particles that enter the smokestack are electrically neutral. What has to happen to them as they move upward and reach the collection plates? Why? To collect the greatest number of… [cont.]
Asked by bakazioneeztuh_23 - Sun Oct 18 02:15:27 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You have a pretty good handle on the operation of electronic precipitators, except you missed one step. The smoke particles will pass by charging wires to change their natural charge to the opposite charge of the plates that are directly after the charging wires. This way the efficiency of the precipitator will usually come out to about 99% down to 0.3 microns. The collection plates are placed so close together that once they build up with dust and particles that they start to snap or arc from one plate to the next. They are spaced closely to allow the maximum number of plates in the unit. The more plates, the more surface area for capturing particles. Aluminum is usually used because of its conductivity to electrical charge and… [cont.]

Does air travelling through an electrostatic filter (like Filtrete) get ionized?
Q. I've heard that ionized air can be potentially harmful (i.e. free radicals) so I want to avoid air cleaners that ionize air. The 3M Filtrete electrostatic polyolefin-based filters (very common in furnace filters, and now as part of a standalone air purifier) are pre-charged with a static charge to attract dirt, dust, and particles of inflowing air. My question is, as air travels through the filter (via a fan) is there any way that it could pick up any of the charge on the electrostatic filter, or that the air can become somewhat ionized in any way or form after it leaves the filter? Now, AFAIK, air doesn't conduct charges well, so my guess would be no, but I'd like to have an expert opinion.
Asked by Joe Jevers - Mon Sep 24 20:47:24 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. they are missnamed, they dont truly ionize air. they clean the air by allowing the elctrostatic charge to cause impurities to stick to the filters, but the air itself does not ionize. ionized gases tend to glow and release heat.

A. you need to elaborate on your question. but if you are wondering how to tell when need to replace your air cleaner, then remove it and hold it up to the sun and if you can see light through it then its not that bad. but if it looks real dirty then its a good idea to replace it.

A. Look for an arrow mark on the units that will indicate the direction of the air flow somewhere near the handle. This may help. Also note how the electrodes contact the units to see if the alignment this may also help. Look for cut marks on the housing. On my electrostatic air filter there are thin wires that act as the ionizer so with some careful observation you may notice differences.

A. Surprisingly, most experts would NOT recommend air purifiers as 1st-line treatments for allergies or asthma. There is limited medical evidence supporting their routine use in these situations. These devices generally won't work unless your asthma triggers are eliminated from the room. Instead, work on eliminating your triggers from your home. Common ones include dust mites, pet dander (especially cats, birds), pollen, and more. Start by removing heavy rugs & drapes from your bedroom. Wash your bed linens regularly. Keep your home as dust-free as possible. Consider using a vaccum cleaner with a HEPA filter, to avoid blowing dusts into the air. If your symptoms continue and still want an air purifier, get one with a HEPA filter. Avoid… [cont.]
